Sketches and Drawings of other Artists

Self Portrait by Kaethe Kollwitz

Since I love to sketch as often as I can, this blog post is about other artists' sketches or drawings. I picked just a few to start and will add more at a later date.

I love the dynmic quality of line creating values and form in Kollwitz's drawings. This self portrait is from The Diary and Letters of Kaethe Kollwitz, edited by Hans Kollwitz (1955).
For more images go to  Spaightwood Galleries.

Rodin's drawings (works of art alone) were sometimes inspiration for his sculptures. The gestural quality combined with his ability to create volume and movement with simple lines and values are elements I love. The drawing below came from  the book, The Drawings of Rodin by Albert Elsen and J.Kirk T. Varnedoe (1971).  Here is a link to some sculptures and drawing of Rodin's  Auguste Rodin (1840-1917)

Plowing by Seurat

Seurat is mostly widely known for his epic pointillist paintings such as Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grand Jatte . But his drawings are beautiful in their subtlety of values, the contrasts of light and dark demonstrating his mastery.  This drawing is from Seurat's Drawings by Robert L. Herbert (1962). More drawings can be seen at Seurat's Drawings.

Pawcatuck River Sketch at the Malted Barley

Recently I went to the Malted Barley in Westerly RI for beer and a pretzel, both of which were excellent.  Enjoyed watching the Pawcatuck River meandering under the bridge in the distance from their back patio. Not quite sure of the shape on the bridge standing, but my imagination took off and I sketched in a human form.

Diggity Dog

Pen and Ink

This weekend I enjoyed a day at The Durham CT Pet Fair.  It was a beautiful sunny day to watch, sketch and photograph dogs, cats, and people.  For some reason Diggity dog came to mind as I sketched this fellow.

Sketching to music, Gandalf Murphy and the The Slambovian Circus of Dreams

Theatrical lighting and good live music often move me to let go and attempt to capture the musician's movement and energy. I really enjoyed Saturday night sketching madly and listening to Gandalf Murphy & the Grand Slambovian Band at the Kate theather in Old Saybrook CT. I totally lost myself drawing in rhythm to their wonderful music. I highly recomend hearing and seeing this band, especially live. Listen to the band's music at either of the following sites.

Musical Sketches

Pen and Ink

Had an enjoyable night sketching and listening to the Rivergods and Black Marmot at the Bank St Cafe in New London, Friday evening. Both bands consisted of really good musicians and I found it exciting and relaxing to sketch and listen. It is definitely a challenge to draw quickly and get the gesture of the person performing.

You can check out both bands at their websites:
